Guido Marussig

Guido Marussig (born December 14, 1885 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary ; died December 20, 1972 in Gorizia ) was an Italian painter, engraver and set designer.

Life

Guido Marussig was the son of the orchestra leader Emilio Marussig and Maria Gentille di Rovigno. His older cousin Pietro Marussig also became a painter.

Marussig attended the state trade school in Trieste and, with a grant from the municipality, went to the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia , where he studied with Ettore Tito and Augusto Sezanne . From 1905 he exhibited at the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte di Venezia . Under the influence of the Vienna Secession and Gustav Klimt , he turned to symbolism . His etchings appeared in L'Eroica magazine. After Italy entered the war in 1915, he moved to Milan in 1916 , where he taught at the “Scuola del Libro di Milano” from 1918 to 1937. He created stage sets, illustrations for magazines and worked with woodcuts .

In 1921 he participated in the design of Gabriele D'Annunzio's Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera . Like his cousin, he became a member of the Novecento artist group .

In 1939 he designed a floor mosaic for the fascist Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan. He created the set for Verdi's opera Nabucco , with which the Teatro alla Scala was reopened on December 26, 1946 after the war damage. After the Second World War he mainly dealt with painting.
