The family of Montorio has the heraldry designer of John XXIII. inspired to include the tower of Montorio in the Pope's coat of arms.

Guido Roncalli di Montorio (born July 10, 1890 in Bergamo ) was an Italian diplomat .

family

Guido Roncalli is a descendant of the noble family di Montorio, which was founded in the 15th century. A prominent member is the composer Ludovico Roncalli . A very extended relative from a side branch of the family is Pope John XXIII, Roncalli.

He is the son of Laura Calvi Roncalli and Francesco Roncalli di Montorio.

Roncalli studied social sciences at the University of Florence .

Use in the First World War

May 6, 1915 he was appointed lieutenant of the cavalry. He was awarded a silver medal for military bravery for daring and dangerous reconnaissance under enemy fire. In June 1916 he carried out explorations on Monte Novegno in Veneto and under heavy fire in November 1916 in Monastir. He was wounded by a grenade.

Diplomatic service

On July 6, 1920, he entered the foreign service and on July 3, 1921, he was appointed Secretary of the Third Class. From December 10, 1921 he was in Warsaw , where he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Legation on March 24, 1924 and on July 25, 1924, Secretary of the Third Class.

On March 27, 1925, he was transferred to Sofia and on August 10 of the same year to Oslo . From May to July 1926 he was chargé d'affaires in Tallinn . On June 1, 1926, he was appointed Secretary of the Second Class. On November 9, 1926, he was transferred back to Sofia. On April 1, 1927, he was appointed Secretary of the First Class and on April 25, 1929, Deputy Minister Renato Piacentini . From January 14, 1930 to 1935, he was First Class Legation Secretary in Washington, DC

From November 22, 1939 to 1941 he was envoy to Jozef Tiso in Bratislava ( Slovak State ) . From December 15, 1947 to December 12, 1950 he was ambassador to Helsinki .
