His father built a natural history cabinet at the museum in Weilburg. Sandberger studied from 1839 natural sciences (especially geology and zoology) in Heidelberg, Marburg, Bonn and Berlin with a doctorate in Heidelberg in 1843 and was from 1845 a collaborator at the grammar school in Wiesbaden and from 1847 teacher for natural sciences at the secondary school there. In 1853 he became vice rector. In 1861 he retired for health reasons.

He published on stratigraphy and palaeontology especially of the Devonian of his homeland ( Rheinisches Schiefergebirge ) with his brother Fridolin Sandberger , who was a professor in Würzburg.
