Guidobaldo da Montefeltro (born January 17, 1472 in Gubbio ; † April 11, 1508 ) was the son of Federico da Montefeltro , Duke of Urbino , and his successor since 1482.

The young Duke of Urbino from the House of Da Montefeltro married Elisabetta Gonzaga (1471–1526), daughter of Federico I Gonzaga , Duke of Mantua in 1489 . Elisabetta Gonzaga, a self-confident, generous and virtuous woman, rarely educated at the time, gave the Duke of Urbino's small court a special charm, and thanks to her influence, Guidobaldo managed to achieve the splendor of a princely court of the Renaissance after the death of his father maintain. The duke and duchess proved to be prudent patrons, so that the court of Urbino earned a good reputation among writers, musicians, painters, philosophers and diplomats. Finally, in 1490, Elisabetta became sister-in-law and friend of the important Renaissance princess Isabella d'Este .

Guidobaldo da Montefeltro was expelled from his duchy and expropriated by Cesare Borgia in 1502 . After the death of Cesare's father, Pope Alexander VI. , in 1503 and the fall of the Borgia soon after , Guidobaldo da Montefeltro got the duchy and his personal property back.

The marriage of Guidobaldo and Elisabetta remained childless due to the impotence of the duke. That is why Guidobaldo adopted Francesco Maria I della Rovere , the son of his sister Giovanna da Montefeltro, in 1504 and appointed this favorite nephew of Pope Julius II to be his successor. In 1508 the della Rovere family took control of the Duchy of Urbino. Francesco Maria II della Rovere , the last Duke of Urbino, handed over the Duchy to the Papal States in 1625.

Baldassare Castiglione began his famous work Il Libro del Cortegiano  - the Hofmann's book - as a member of the court of Guidobaldo and Elisabetta.
