Surrey Heat is a basketball team from Guildford , England . Originally founded in Portsmouth in 1975 as Southern Pirates , the team soon moved to Guildford, where they played until 1982. Then they found the way to Bracknell , where they played until 2005 and first changed the name to Bracknell Tigers and finally to Thames Valley Tigers . In 2005 the owner John Nike, who also owned the ice hockey club Bracknell Bees , financed the interest in the Tigers and released the franchise organized in the closed professional league British Basketball League (BBL) . As a result, supporters of the team found a new venue in Guildford and the team returned to their long-standing headquarters as Guildford Heat , where they have been playing as Surrey Heat since 2012.

history

Pirates (1975 to 1987)

The 1975 established in Portsmouth team found a suitable venue in Guildford and then moved their headquarters to Surrey . Without having achieved any major success there, the Pirates finally moved to Bracknell in neighboring Berkshire in 1982 .

Tigers (1987 to 2005)

In 1987, under the new name Tigers, one of the founding members of the closed professional league British Basketball League (BBL). In the first two seasons they lost in the play-offs against the Scottish team Murray BC from Livingston , but won the league cup BBL Trophy against this opponent in the final and the National Cup in 1989 , which was played without the Scottish teams. In the following seasons they qualified for the play-offs and reached the finals in the play-offs and in the National Cup, which were lost to the then dominant team of the Kingston Kings , under the name Thames Valley Tigers, which has been used since 1990 . A year later they reached the play-off final again in 1993, which this time was lost to the Worthing Bears by one point . For this they won again the BBL Trophy against the Kings, who had moved to Guildford in the new hall "The Spectrum". This title could be defended in the following two years. While they lost in the final of the National Cup in 1994 against the Worthing Bears, they reached the play-offs of the BBL as the first of the regular season and put with Nigel Lloyd the " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the league. In the play-offs, however, they were surprisingly eliminated in the first round. The same was repeated in the following year 1995, when you knocked out the main round runner-up with ex- NBA pro Steve Bucknall against the Bears in the first round. While you could beat the Sheffield Sharks in the final of the BBL Trophy , you lost the final of the National Cup against this opponent, who also won the play-offs of the BBL.

In the 1995/96 season they were eliminated in play-offs, league cup and cup competition each against the London Towers , which also won two of these three competitions in the end. After finishing eighth after the regular season in 1996, the 1996/97 season completely missed the play-offs for the championship. It wasn't until 1998 that they qualified again for the championship finals, in which they moved into the final, which was lost to the Birmingham Bullets . For this they won the final of the National Cup and got the second title win in this competition. A year later they were again in the play-off final, which this time was lost to the London Towers. After a play-off first round from 2000 you missed the play-offs completely in the two following seasons. In the three following seasons they were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs. Then owner John Nike lost interest and gave back the license.

The supporters of the Tigers did not want to accept the end of the team and found a new hall with "The Spectrum" at the old place of work in Guildford, in which the Guildford Kings had already played from 1992 to 1994. The BBL granted a new license and the activities of the BBL continued under the new name Guildford Heat . In the first year they survived the first play-off round, which the Tigers hadn't done since 1999. In the semifinals, however, they lost against the eventual title holder Newcastle Eagles . A year later they won the regular season of the BBL and moved with co-MVP Brian Dux as first in the play-offs, in which they lost in the semi-finals to the Scottish Rocks , against which they had won the final game in the BBL Cup. With this success behind them, old star Tony Dorsey , twice MVP of the BBL in the 1990s, was signed up for the ULEB Cup 2007/08 , in which they mostly lost all ten preliminary round games, especially since they lost Brian Dux in November 2007, who probably suffered permanent health damage after a car accident and lack of first aid. The defeat with the smallest point difference was the 71:80 home defeat with nine points against the German representative ALBA Berlin . In the national championship they moved in 2008 as second in the play-offs, in which they defeated the Milton Keynes Lions in the final and won the championship play-offs of the BBL for the first time in history. The BBL Trophy celebrated its second title this year. A year later they lost this title in a new edition of the final game again to the Newcastle Eagles and also retired as defending champion in the first round of the play-offs.

In the 2009/10 season, the Heat completely missed the play-offs. The following season they moved to the Surrey Sports Park and lost in the 2010/11 season the final game of the BBL Trophy against the Mersey Tigers , who also won the play-offs, in which the Heat as well as a year later in the first Eliminated round. In 2012, the name of the franchise was changed to Surrey Heat and a new logo was given. As fourth in the 2012/13 season they survived the first play-off round for the first time since winning in 2008, but lost in the semi-finals against defending champions Newcastle Eagles.
