Anthony Jerald "Tony" Dorsey (born June 15, 1970 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is a retired basketball player . The native Americans played after studying in his native country as a professional until 2000, interrupted by a brief stint in the German Basketball League , in the British Basketball League . As a result of the Bosman decision , Dorsey acquired British citizenship and then played in Israel , France , Belgium and Italy before ending his active career in 2009 in his adopted country. For the English national basketball team , he played 15 missions.

Career

Dorsey studied at the University of North Alabama in Florence , where he played for the college team Lions in the NCAA Division II. In the not so important second division of the NCAA, he won the national finals with the Lions in 1991. Then he was active in his hometown for the Trojans in the summer league United States Basketball League and is also said to have played in the Dominican Republic . At first, Dorsey did not get a contract in a major professional league.

In 1994 Dorsey moved to Europe and signed a contract with the Bullets from Birmingham in the British Basketball League. In his second season he won the championship of this league with the Bullets and was named MVP of the past season. He was the successor to Roger Huggins , who had become MVP a year earlier while operating in the same position. Then Dorsey moved to the German basketball league to the former champion Steiner Bayreuth, but did not find his way around there and switched back to the bullets in the English-speaking BBL. In 1998 he won the championship again with the Bullets and then moved to league rivals Giants from Manchester , with whom he won the championship in 2000 and was again named MVP of the league. Dorsey acquired British citizenship and became a member of the English national team, but with which he could not qualify for any title bouts.

As a Briton, Dorsey was no longer considered a foreigner in European club teams in the wake of the Bosman decision and therefore no longer took away any other US players' eligibility to play. First of all, Dorsey moved to the Israeli Ligat ha'Al to Hapoel from Jerusalem for the 2000/01 season . While the Israeli series champion Maccabi Tel Aviv started in the Suproleague of FIBA Europe , Hapoel joined the newly founded ULEB Euroleague , but in the first season of which they were eliminated in the preliminary round. At the end of the season, the team was reinforced by his English national team colleague Roger Huggins and reached the championship final, which was lost to Maccabi Tel Aviv. For the 2001/02 season, Dorsey then moved to the French LNB Pro A for the club from Cholet . In the French league Dorsey was this season top scorer with 20 points per game and reached third place in the final table. In the play-offs for the championship they then lost the semi-final series against the eventual champions ASVEL .

In 2002 Dorsey then moved to the Belgian champions from Ostend in Flanders . However, the title was not defended, instead the Walloon competitor Spirou BC Charleroi won the Belgian double with Huggins in his ranks . Also in the following two seasons there were no title wins for the multiple Belgian champions and cup winners. In 2005 Dorsey finally moved to Italy and played in the second division LegADue for the club from Scafati , but already moved to the league competitor in Jesi at the end of October . While Scafati was directly promoted to the top Italian division at the end of the season, Jesi was eliminated early in the play-offs for the remaining promotion spot.

In 2006, the now 36-year-old Dorsey returned to his adopted country and played for the British champions Eagles from Newcastle , with whom he successfully defended the title in the British Basketball League (BBL). For the following season he moved to the BBL Cup winner Heat from Guildford , with whom he was able to celebrate his fifth British championship in 2008. In the ULEB Cup 2007/08 , however, they had no chance and lost all ten games in the preliminary round. In the 2008/09 season he was still for the Everton Tigers on the floor, which lost the final of the championship against his ex-club Newcastle Eagles at the end of the season. Previously, the BBL Cup had won a title for the Tigers for the first time. Then his active career was finally over. In the BBL's all-time best list, Dorsey ranks among the top ten best point collectors with 5826 points in 273 games.
