Guillaume Liberge de Granchain
Guillaume Jacques Constant de Liberge de Granchain (born February 9, 1744 in Granchain (today Mesnil-en-Ouche , Département Eure ), † June 18, 1805 ibid) was a French admiral, astronomer and hydrograph .
At the age of 13, Liberge de Granchain entered the Brest naval base in 1757 . In the same year he had his first combat mission, was wounded, was taken prisoner and was brought to England, where he spent 14 months in captivity. In the following years he took part in several scientific expeditions in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, where he was able to distinguish himself through comprehension and reliability. In 1771 he became a member of the Académie de marine . In 1777 he was promoted to lieutenant de vaisseau , a captain's rank.
Between 1778 and 1781 he took part in the American War of Independence and carried out several important missions, including in the naval battle off the Chesapeake Bay . In 1782 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 1782 Liberge de Grandchain married a first cousin, Marie Françoise Amélie De Mauduit de Carentonne-Sémerville. Also in 1782 he was commissioned with the expansion of the port of Le Havre , in 1784 he took over command in Newfoundland and in 1786 the parts of the French fleet stationed in Brest . In 1789 he was a representative of the nobility in the Estates General . In 1790 he took over the management of all ports and arsenals. In 1791 Liberge de Granchain ended his active military career. In 1795 he became a corresponding member of the Institut national (today Institut de France ). In 1797 he belonged to a commission that was supposed to prepare a possible invasion of England.
Liberge de Granchain was a knight of the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati .
