Life

As the architect of the “Ospedale Maggiore”, Solari was the successor to the sculptor and architect Filarete (1400–1469). He was later commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Francesco I. Sforza (1401–1466), to build the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie and to supervise work on the Milan Cathedral . For some time he was also the architect of the Certosa di Pavia, which his father Giovanni (1410–1480) had started . Father and son both stayed true to Italian Gothic architecture , but they also combined new Renaissance architecture with the Lombard tradition. He was also instrumental in the architecture and construction of the Moscow Kremlin.
