Gul Agha Schersai ( Pashtun گل آغا شېرزی, * 1955 as Mohammad Schafiq in the province of Kandahar ) is a Pashtun administrative officer, politician and former mujahed in Afghanistan .

Life

Schersai ("son of the lion" in Pashtun) fought in Kandahar as a so-called mujahedd against the Soviet Union , which intervened in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in favor of the communist government under the Democratic People's Party . After that, Schersai was governor of Kandahar province in the early 1990s and after the fall of the Taliban from 2001 to 2003 .

Since 2004 he has been the governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar . There he was nicknamed "Bulldozer", he opened the road connection between Jalalabad and Torcham , the most important border crossing to Pakistan .

When he took office, Shersai had gone to the market incognito to find out what people's greatest problems were and asked people what they thought of the new governor. Schersai explains that the biggest problem in Afghanistan is the mullahs . One should not let the Taliban build Koran schools all over the country, but should build “secular” schools for prospective preachers.

At the convening of the “National Council” in the football stadium in Kandahar, Gul Agha Schersai expressed his loyalty to Mohammed Sahir Shah , the former king of Afghanistan , in front of around 15,000 people. In his speech, Gul Agha also attacked neighboring Iran , accusing it of pumping weapons and money into the country in order to weaken the current rulers.

In the 2009 presidential election , Schersai was considered a major competitor to the incumbent Hamid Karzai , but after several hours of talks with the president, he renounced his candidacy.
