The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site of Canada in Steveston , British Columbia . The former fish canning factory, built in 1894, now serves as a fishing museum.

history

Until 1902, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, also known as the Monster Cannery , was the largest canning factory in British Columbia. In 1897, over 2.5 million cans of salmon were manually packed here.

In 1930 the now obsolete factory was closed. It was only reopened after the outbreak of World War II in Europe, and now herring was processed using new machines . Herring served as an important source of protein for troops and civilians during the war . With the end of the war this market collapsed, which meant the end of the production of canned herring in British Columbia. All that remained was the production of animal feed from herring, which, however, largely came to a standstill at the end of the 1960s when restrictive quotas were set as a result of overfishing . In the 1970s, production could only be maintained because a new market for herring roe had formed in Japan and the waste could be processed.

In 1979 the factory was finally shut down due to the high operating costs for the outdated machinery. The buildings were then initially used as a warehouse. The Canadian federal government purchased the property and on July 15, 1976 declared the facility to be the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site of Canada . In 1984 management was transferred to Parks Canada . In 1986, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society was established as a not-for-profit sponsoring company. In 1994, a hundred years after the factory opened, the National Historic Site opened to the public. Today the former factory is one of the few federally owned National Historic Sites operated by third parties.
