history

Gulf of Georgia Cannery

The namesake of the place, Manoah Steves , was a second cousin of William Henry Steeves . Manoah Steves settled here with his family in 1877 or 1878. On the way from Moncton via Chatham-Kent , he did without the second "e" in his last name. It was the first white family to settle in the area. The actual founder of Stevestons was Manoah's son William Herbert. The name was given in 1889. The production of canned salmon on the Fraser began two years later. The first large canning factory called Phoenix was founded by Marshall English and Samuel Martin in 1882. There were 45 factories in the 1890s, approximately half of them in Steveston.

Every summer fishermen and factory workers of Japanese , Chinese , Indian and European origins settled in large numbers in the place. Fishing also formed the basis of a significant shipbuilding industry, both boats and ships were built. Merchant ships from all over the world were loaded with canned salmon here. Population growth peaked before the First World War . Steveston was advertised at that time as "Salmonopolis" and alleged competitor of Vancouver .

Canadians of Japanese descent made up a large part of Steveston's population. Their internment during World War II was a severe blow to the community, although some of the internees returned after their release and a sizable Japanese community still exists today. For example, after the internment, a center for Japanese martial arts was established.

After the war, Steveston and Richmond developed into a residential suburb of Vancouver by converting arable land to building land. Since the 1970s, the historical character and the port area have been specifically developed to promote the settlement of companies and tourism. The 1990s saw the end of the canned salmon industry.
