Gulmarg: ski area |
Gulmarg is a wide valley and namesake of the place located in it in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir in India . The name Gulmarg means "meadow of flowers".
The flat meadow valley, about three kilometers long, lies 52 km west of Srinagar at an altitude of about 2700 m in the Pir Panjal , a mountain range that closes the Kashmir Valley to the southwest.
The place consists of a few buildings that are widely scattered across the valley, primarily small hotels, restaurants, accommodation and mountain huts. There is the Gulmarg Gondola , a 5 km long gondola lift , and two drag lifts near the valley station.
In the population statistics, the place is listed with 664 inhabitants, although only tourists and those employed in tourism are allowed to stay in the valley overnight.
Gulmarg lives from tourism, which is still in its infancy, in the largely undeveloped mountains. Various circular hikes can be made in summer, and in winter there is free skiing on mostly unprepared and unsupervised slopes from the 4200 m high Mount Apharwat . The ski season starts here in mid-December and lasts until mid-May. Since the low pressure areas moving up over the Indus Basin lose their precipitation first over the Pir Panjal chain, snowfalls of up to 20 m per year are not uncommon.
