Gunnar Nordström (born March 12, 1881 in Helsinki ; † December 24, 1923 ibid) was a Finnish theoretical physicist who is known for his theory of gravity , which was an early competitor of general relativity .

Nordström received his doctorate in 1908 at the University of Helsinki and became a lecturer there. He later worked in Leiden for several years and in 1918 became a professor at the Helsinki University of Technology .

In 1914, Nordström published his theory, which contained an additional dimension of space and thus could describe gravitation and electromagnetism at the same time , the first theory with an additional dimension; such theories are now known as Kaluza Klein theories .

During his time in Leiden, Nordström solved the field equations for the spherically-symmetrically charged body and thus extended Hans Reissner's result for a point charge . The metric for non-rotating charge distributions is now known as the Reissner-Nordström metric .

Nordström died in December 1923 at the age of 42.
