The dam Gura Apelor or Gura Apei (Romanian Baraj Gura Apelor or Baraj Gura Apei ) with its Lacul Gura Apelor reservoir is the highest dam in Romania and currently the fifth-highest dam made of rock fill in Europe. It is located in the Retezat Mountains south of the cities of Hunedoara and Hațeg and dams the Râul Mare .

The hydropower plant is designed as a cavern power plant , ie it is located in an underground cavern that was carved into the rock. The cavern has the following dimensions: length: 65 m, width: 16 m, height: 44.2 m. The power plant is equipped with two Francis turbines of 165.5 MW each. It was put into operation in 1986 and connected to the national supply network. Every year 629.5 GWh can be produced.
