Gurgen Dalibaltajan ( Armenian Գուրգեն Հարությունի Դալիբալթայան; born June 5, 1926 in the municipality of Ninozminda , Samtskhe-Javakheti Region , Georgian SSR , USSR ; † September 1, 2015 in Yerevan , Armenia ) was a Soviet military commander and colonel general of the armed forces of Armenia .

biography

Dalibaltajan attended secondary school in the Armenian-populated village of Gorelowka in Georgia between 1934 and 1944. After graduation, he spent three years in the Tbilisi Infantry School before being drafted into the Soviet military .

Dalibaltayan began his military career in 1947 as platoon leader of a special regiment in Echmiadzin , which belonged to the 89th Tamanyan Rifle Division. In Armenia he served 11 years and in 1958 rose to the position of chief of staff of the 34th Rifle Regiment of the 73rd Mechanized Division stationed in Yerevan.

In 1961, Dalibaltajan was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Azerbaijani SSR . He was used in various positions and in 1967 moved to deputy commander of the 60th Motorized Division, which was stationed in Kirowabad (now Gəncə ). In 1968 he was awarded the rank of colonel .

After military stations in the West Siberian Military District (1969-1975, promotion to Major General ) and in the Southern Troop Group in Budapest (1975-1980), Dalibaltajan served as deputy commander of the North Caucasian Military District in Rostov-on-Don between 1980 and 1987 before he was dismissed from service .

With the outbreak of the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the breakaway province of Nagorno-Karabakh , Dalibaltayan was appointed the first deputy defense minister of the Republic of Armenia (1991-1993) and promoted to lieutenant general. Together with Arkadi Ter-Tadewosjan he is considered a key figure in the occupation of the Azerbaijani city of Shusha .

From 1993 to 2007, Dalibaltajan was an adviser to the Armenian President and Chief Military Inspector.
