Arkadi Ter-Tadewosjan ( Armenian Արկադի Տեր-Թադեւոսյան ; Russian Аркадий Тер-Тадевосян , better known by his nickname "Kommandos"; * May 22, 1939 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ; † March 31, 2021 in Yerevan , Armenia ) an Armenian major general , leader of the Armenian military units during the Nagorno-Karabakh War and Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia .

Life

After graduating from school in Tbilisi, Ter-Tadewosjan decided to become an officer. He completed military training in a combined army command school in Baku in 1962 . He then continued this at the Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg ) Military Academy for Rear Services and Transport . Ter-Tadewosjan did his military service in Afghanistan (here he got the first nickname "Mountain Fox"), the GDR , Czechoslovakia and Belarus . He also worked for some time as a lecturer at the Armenian State Agricultural University in Yerevan .

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union , Ter-Tadewosjan returned to Armenia and from 1990 devoted himself to training and setting up Armenian military units for the upcoming war against Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh. He played a crucial role in the conquest of the Azerbaijani enclave Shusha in May 1992, for which he was promoted to major general a short time later .

Between 1993 and 1995, Ter-Tadewosjan headed the Military Personnel Department in the Ministry of Defense of Armenia .

After retiring from active service (2001), Ter-Tadewosjan concentrated in his work mainly on the training and preparation of Armenian army specialists.

Act

In the book "The Glorious Victory of the Armenian Weapon" (Russian: "Славная победа армянского оружия") by Melik Shachnasaryan , Ter-Tadewosjan is described as a key figure in the occupation of the city of Chodjali in February 1992. Accordingly, he participated in the drafting of the operational plan and directly commanded the military company. The Khodjali massacre , in which several hundred Azerbaijani civilians were murdered by Armenian units , is considered the largest massacre during the Nagorno-Karabakh war in the early 1990s , according to Human Rights Watch .

Ter-Tadewosjan attracted attention with his martial appearances by repeatedly threatening Azerbaijan. At a press conference in February 2016 and most recently in October 2017, in an interview with the Armenian online newspaper Lragir, he pleaded for the "complete destruction of Azerbaijan" if Baku opts for a military option in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict .
