Gush Shalom

Gush Schalom (Eng. "The Peace Block"; spelling often based on the English transcription Gush Shalom ) is an Israeli peace initiative . It was founded in 1992 ; its leading representative since then has been Uri Avnery , other well-known members are Michel Warschawski and Mattityahu "Matti" Peled .

aims

The reason for the founding of the initiative was the Rabin government's policy, which was no longer sufficiently peace-oriented, in their view . The main aim of Gush Shalom is to influence Israeli public opinion and to lead it in the direction of peace and reconciliation with the Palestinians . Gush Schalom tries to achieve this by means of daily statements, campaigns and demonstrations against prejudice, misunderstandings and resignation.

Gush Shalom takes the view that Yasser Arafat was the only guarantee of peace in the Middle East conflict. Arafat's decades of involvement in terrorist attacks and his support for the Second Intifada are each described as a direct result of Israeli policy towards the Palestinians. Corruption allegations against the Arafat authority, which were proven by the International Monetary Fund , among others , were propaganda by the Sharon government . According to Gush Shalom, Arafat was also promised far less at Camp David in 2000 than was publicly announced at the time. Instead of a “generous offer” it was “a humiliating demand for surrender”; the peace initiative published maps and an animation on the Israeli proposal.

Gush Schalom is of the opinion that, in view of the Israeli settlement policy with ever advancing new building and expansion of Jewish settlements on Palestinian territory, in a few decades no independent Palestinian life and no more autonomous aspirations of the Palestinians will be possible and that the USA as well as the EU with its Peace initiatives such as B. the roadmap , the settlement policy until then only to accompany, but not prevent. Israel thereby committed a slow genocide . This controversial view is currently only marginally shared by the Israeli public, even if a majority there supports an at least partial evacuation of the settlements.

Gush Schalom tries to establish a new conception of history in which the history of the Palestine region rather than the history of the Israeli or Palestinian people comes to the fore. Gush Schalom helps Palestinian farmers harvest olives and build Palestinian houses. Furthermore, the organization advocates a boycott of settlement products and provides information about them in a list that is updated at regular intervals.
