Gustave de Smet (born January 21, 1877 in Ghent , † October 8, 1943 in Deurle , East Flanders ) was a Belgian painter of impressionism and expressionism . De Smet studied at the Academy of Ghent until 1898 . His early work was shaped by impressionism. From 1908 he worked in Sint-Martens-Latem . When the First World War broke out , he fled to the Netherlands in 1914 . There he came into contact with expressionists, which fundamentally changed his painting style. The works of this time were gloomy, but also characterized by restlessness and dynamism. In 1922 he returned to Belgium, where he lived first in Afsnee and then in Deurle. His house there is now a museum. The pictures of this time, which mostly have people as motifs, put off the depressive mood, but remain serious. Landscapes and urban scenes increasingly appeared, and the composition of the image took on more gentle forms. In his last creative phase, almost realistic paintings were created.
