The Gustaf Dalman Institute is located in the Theological Faculty of the University of Greifswald . Since 1920 it has been used for research and teaching on biblical geography and antiquity. A collection, including around 10,000 historical photographs , documents Palestine in the period before the First World War .

history

The theologian Gustaf Dalman (1855–1941) headed the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies of the Holy Land in Jerusalem from 1902 . Captured by the upheavals of the First World War in Germany, Dalman finally continued his research in Greifswald in 1917 . Here in 1920 he founded the Institute for Biblical Geography and Antiquity, which was later named after him. Today the Gustaf Dalman Institute is again working closely with the Jerusalem "mother institute".

collection

With Dalman, part of his Jerusalem collection came to Greifswald in 1917 : small archaeological finds, household and field tools, wood, plant and rock samples, a herbarium, maps and relief maps as well as around 10,000 historical photographs. The institute's library contains around 5,000 volumes, some of which date back to the 16th century. The Gustaf Dalman collection is continuously digitized. Around 3,700 photographs can be researched online.

meaning

With its interdisciplinary collection, the Gustaf Dalman Institute conveys the image of a lost culture: Palestine before the First World War . At that time the region was still characterized by a rich rural and nomadic culture. Dalman originally wanted to enable conclusions to be drawn about the land of the Bible with his work. Today researchers appreciate the documentation of landscapes and customs, buildings and excavations that can no longer be found on site today.

The historical development of the institute was closely linked in teaching and research with the theological personality Julia Männchen (1939–2018), professor emeritus for the Old Testament. Since 1968 she has been teaching Hebrew and Old Testament biblical studies at Greifswald University, and since 1980 she has devoted herself to further organizing and researching the extensive Palestine collection , the legacy of the then well-known Protestant researcher for Palestine and Judaism Gustaf Dalman. The scientist also volunteered for the Christian-Jewish dialogue and was involved in the Greifswald working group Church and Judaism (see S. Marx 2018).
