Gustaf Robert Dahlander (born June 7, 1834 in Gothenburg , † September 27, 1903 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish engineer and physicist and from 1890 to 1902 director of the Royal Institute of Technology.

Life

Dahlander studied at the Chalmers Technical University in Gothenburg and the Skepp Byggeri Institutet in Karlskrona and graduated in 1852 as a shipbuilder. In 1856 he did his Master of Science at the Högre artilleriläroverket in Marieberg, was then employed as a teacher at the Chalmers University of Technology and in 1862 was appointed associate professor at the Chalmers. In 1870 he became a professor of theoretical and applied physics at the Technological Institute. From 1860 he was a member of the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg and from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1893 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University .

In both Gothenburg and Stockholm Dahlander had several important tasks for the state and municipality. So he was later a member of the committee for the organization of technical training (1872–1876). Dahlander contributed to the rehabilitation and development of technical education in Sweden. He was also involved in organizing the city's waterworks and developing the electricity and telephone network in Stockholm. From 1883 to 1902 Dahlander was a member and chairman of the board of directors of the Royal Technical University in Stockholm.

From 1890 to 1902 Dahlander was Acting Rector of the Royal Institute of Technology (RIT). A major step forward for electrical engineering and shipbuilding in the history of development was the introduction of colleges (KTH). Colleges (KHT) had changing admission criteria, whereby the Abitur has become mandatory for regular students. KTH brought about the creation of physical and electro-technical laboratories and the expansion of their material testing organization.

Dahlander became a professor in applied physics and a professor in electrical engineering on his own initiative in 1899. He thus became the first "Royal Institute of Technology" professor in an electro-technical subject and is considered to be the founder of the field at the KTH.

Dahlander was also a business journalist. The Academy of Sciences published documents, annals of physics and chemistry Dahlander and other journals published his special studies on determinant theory, the geometric theory of acceleration, light diffraction, mechanical heat theory, safety factor, heat sinks in liquids.

From 1859 to 1866 he was editor of the first Swedish technical magazine, the magazine for technology and applied learning. Dahlander wrote numerous articles on the mechanics of the Nordisk familjebok. Under the signature “Dr. Dahlander ”he made numerous trips abroad for scientific and technical purposes, including 1865–1866 as a“ Fellow Letterstedt ”of the Academy of Sciences and in 1873 and 1877 for the Swedish government.

He was the father of Robert Dahlander .
