The Gustav-Heinemann-Brücke is a road bridge in the Essen district of Werden . It leads the federal highway 224 over the Ruhr .

history

A previous building: the former Königsbrücke around 1915

There were several previous structures of today's Gustav Heinemann Bridge. The first bridge at this point was mentioned in a document as early as 1065. In 1642 and again in 1752 the Werdener Bridge was destroyed by floods. On the east side of one of these bridges there was a Ruhr or bridge gate.

The Königsbrücke was not built until 1853/1854 , on which the monument of Kaiser Wilhelm I was unveiled in 1884 . In 1891 the statues of Helmuth von Moltke and Otto von Bismarck , also created by Wilhelm Albermann , followed on the Königsbrücke , which are now in the Dückerpark in Werden. These three sandstone statues were added to the monuments list of the city of Essen in 1986 as movable memorials . This steel bridge was laid down in 1932 and replaced by a concrete road bridge. There are bus stops near the bridgeheads and another stop for train buses on the bridge ; Essen-Werden train station is located north of the structure . In the 1960s this bridge was finally replaced by today's Gustav Heinemann Bridge.

In 1965, the City Council of Essen decided to build a new building. On December 20, 1968, the new Werdener Bridge was inaugurated in the presence of the then Mayor Wilhelm Nieswandt . In the course of the new bridge construction, the crossing of the Essen-Werden-Essen railway line in the direction of Kettwig was rebuilt on the west side . In February 1982, the bridge was named after Gustav Heinemann , the former Lord Mayor of Essen (1946-1949) and third Federal President (1969-1974).

Technical specifications

Gustav Heinemann Bridge 2006 (before renovation)

The approximately 14 meters wide, haunched girder bridge made of prestressed concrete has a box girder in which all the important supply lines run. Their abutments reach up to 13 meters deep into the ground.

In the 1980s, the bridge had to be reinforced with tendons along and across the pier girders because cracks were found in the base plate.

At the end of 2011, extensive renovation work with a value of around 1.3 million euros was completed. Mainly damage caused by penetrating moisture was repaired. The scope of the work also included new traffic lights, wider pedestrian and cycle paths, larger pedestrian islands, lanes adapted in width and number and railings adapted to a height of 1.2 meters.
