Gustav Ampt

Gustav Adolph Ampt (born October 4, 1853 in Rastatt , † October 24, 1942 in Point Lonsdale , Queenscliffe Borough ) was a German railway engineer .

He was responsible for the planning and design of a large number of stations and rails in the Australian state of Victoria .

Life

Gustav Ampt, son of the brewer Karl Friedrich Ampt (1815–1872) and Maria Anna geb. Fückert († 1869), attended the Lyceum in Rastatt. He then attended the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe from 1871 to 1878 . Between his fourth and fifth years he was a volunteer in the 2nd Badischer Feld-Artillerie-Regiment No. 30 for a year . He emigrated to Australia via London , and arrived in Melbourne on March 30, 1880 .

Ampt worked as a draftsman for Victorian Railways from March 16, 1882 . In 1892 he moved to the unit responsible for construction. He was responsible for the planning and design of a large number of stations and rails in the state of Victoria. In 1897 he became a chief draftsman and campaigned against the use of narrow-gauge railways for the railroad in Victoria . He retired on April 12, 1917.

Ampt married Emilie Clara Adelaide geb. Sander on November 17, 1883. The marriage had two children, Gustav Adolph Ampt (1886–1953), inventor of the Green Ampt infiltration model , and Gertrude Emma Dora Ampt (1888–1907).
