Gustav Delius (born May 1, 1794 in Bielefeld , † April 10, 1872 in Böckel ) was a German entrepreneur in the textile industry.

Life

He was the son of Ernst August Delius (1763-1839), businessman and senator in Bielefeld. Gustav Delius attended high school in Bielefeld. He then did a commercial apprenticeship in the linen trade in his father's company and at a bank in Berlin.

In 1827 Delius joined the linen business and his father's linen, silk and plush factory. Together with his brother Gottfried , he continued the business under the name EA Delius & Sons. In the 1830s, he was one of the first to try to introduce the publishing system into proto-industrial linen production instead of pure trade. Due to competition from English machine fabrics, the company came under great pressure, especially in the 1840s. In the discussions about the introduction of machine linen production, Delius was one of the spokesmen for the traditionally minded merchants. This rejected mechanization and wanted to preserve the traditional methods of production and sales, as Delius explained in a memorandum from 1847. Delius later turned around and in 1855 supported the establishment of the Ravensberger spinning mill . From 1860 onwards he mainly looked after his Gut Böckel and set up a veritable museum of small art objects there.

In Bielefeld's local politics, he was the leader of the merchants' party in the city council. At times Delius was the merchant with the highest annual income in Bielefeld. The fact that he received royal guests in his home in Bielefeld speaks for his importance: in 1821 King Friedrich Wilhelm III. of Prussia and in 1841 King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , with whom he spoke openly about the needs of his homeland during this time. In 1841 he acquired the Böckel estate .

In 1818 he married Lucie von Laer (1798–1847), the daughter of the Bielefeld linen dealer Friedrich von Laer . He and his wife had 10 children, including Hermann Delius . In 1856 he married his second wife Christine Wilhelmine Benter (1817-1893).

For his services, Delius received the honorary title of Commerce Councilor in 1843 .
