Life

Gustav Goes studied in Munich and Marburg , then went to the military and was a soldier in Bamberg from 1907. He experienced the First World War as an adjutant to a senior officer and was then stationed in Potsdam from 1919 , where he was employed in the war history department of the Great General Staff . When the Great General Staff was dissolved in 1920, Goes took his leave with the rank of captain and moved to the Reichsarchiv in Potsdam, where he later acquired the title of senior army archivist. In 1938, together with authors such as Walter Bloem and Anton Bossi Fedrigotti, he was a participant in the so-called Reichsfront Dichterreffen held at Buderose Castle , which was initiated by Jürgen Hahn-Butry . He first wrote fairy tales and short stories, but after the success of his fantastic fairy tale novel The Locked Book he switched to military books , stadium games related to the things games and patriotic stage works.

In The Closed Book , whose plot bears similarities to the Neverending Story by Michael Ende , which was written much later, a thirteen-year-old boy tells of his regular visits to his grandfather's pharmacy. On these occasions the pharmacist reads to him from a very old, lockable book. The boy is forbidden to even read the book. When he does one day, he is drawn into the book and given a new name, becomes part of the story told in it. He comes under the influence of the dark wizard Hagan, who is an eternal wanderer and not only uses the boy as his supply boy, but also uses him - under another name - to win the favor of Alisa, the princess of Alcandar. After numerous fantastic adventures, including a flight on a griffin , a visit to the world of microorganisms and the eventual failure of the wizard's plans, the boy returns from the book to his grandfather's house.

A retelling of the story has recently appeared.
