Gustav Jacoby

Gustav Jacoby (born December 24, 1895 in Wiesbaden , † May 25, 1939 in Berlin (?)) Was a German humorist and lecturer.

Live and act

He was a son of the pleasure play poet Wilhelm Jacoby , whose farce “ Pension Schöller ” is still played today. Originally he was supposed to start an apprenticeship as a businessman at a sparkling wine cellar, but he was drawn to the stage. He got a traineeship at the Frankfurter Schauspielhaus. This was followed by engagements in Bad Homburg, in the seaside resort of Binz and in Putbus on the island of Rügen. In 1917 he was drafted and appeared in front theaters.

A failed classic performance after the end of the First World War, during which he was devastatingly criticized, Jacoby owed the change to the humorous field. From then on he entertained his audience at lecture evenings with his own conférences and was so successful that he soon rose to become one of the greats of cabaret. He made his debut in 1924 on Berlin radio. But the "Lustige Evenings" at WERAG , the forerunner of West German Broadcasting, made him really well known , for which he worked as an emcee. But he also appears on other German broadcasters and stages, such as B. at the Deutsches Theater in Munich or in the Berlin “Scala” .

The criticism of the contemporary press distinguished him with ratings such as “strong artistic personality”, “witty, humorous chat” and “great lecturer”, even called him a “real causeur ” and “true bohemian ”. His “rich range of modulation” and “excellent language technique” were highlighted.

His specialties were witty chats and dialect walks through the landscapes of the empire, whose dialects he mastered: "One of the best-known numbers that Jacoby performed was the 'representation of compatriot types in expression and gesture'". Performing with a monocle and cigar, his inevitable hallmarks, he was one of the most popular humorists in Germany in the 1930s. At the end of 1938 a serious illness forced him to give up his job. He died at the age of 44.

For Lindström's Odeon label, he recorded a series of gramophone records in the second half of the 1920s, which have received his voice for posterity.
