Gustav Matthis

Gustav Matthis (born September 28, 1844 in Strasbourg , † June 23, 1902 in Gungwiller ) was an Alsatian Lutheran pastor and writer .

Life

Gustav Matthis was born as the son of the bookbinder Johannes Jakob Matthis and his wife Sophie, Emilie b. Frisians born. In 1850 his mother died. Encouraged by his teacher and pastor Franz Härter , he decided to become a pastor and studied Protestant theology in Strasbourg. There he became a member of the Argentina student union in the Wingolfsbund in 1862/1863 , whose historiographer he later became. He finished his studies with a work Essai d'une Christologie d'après les paroles de Jésus contenues dans les Evangiles synoptiques , with which he obtained the degree of Baccalaureus . This was followed by traveling and studying through Germany to Denmark and Sweden, during which he also became a member of the Leipzig Wingolf in 1867 .

In 1869 Matthis became the parish administrator in Erstein . In 1874 he took over a pastorate in Eyweiler . In 1876 he married Wilhelmine Schaffner from Plobsheim . In 1896 he resigned his pastoral office for health reasons and moved into his house, which he had built not far from his community on the Gungweiler Höhe.

During his activity as a pastor he worked as a historiographer and writer.
