Friedrich Gustav Schmidt (born August 12, 1844 in Buckau , † November 13, 1901 in Magdeburg ) was a German sugar manufacturer and merchant.

Life

Schmidt was born as the eldest son of the merchant and sugar factory owner Albert Schmidt . His father, together with his brother Herrmann Schmidt and Henry Coqui, founded the company Gebrüder Schmidt and Coqui in Westerhüsen in 1838 . Gustav Schmidt completed a commercial apprenticeship. After Hermann Schmidt's death in 1867, Gustav Schmidt joined the company. He became a partner in the family business and lived in the family's Westerhüser home. His father died in 1881 and he took over the commercial management of the company. Other areas were run by his half-brothers Robert and Paul Schmidt . After Paul Schmidt married in 1882, Gustav Schmidt moved back to Magdeburg.

As a representative of the sugar industry, Schmidt was involved in the Magdeburg corporation of the merchants and the Magdeburg Chamber of Commerce and was also active as a city councilor. He also worked in several organizations in the German sugar industry. He was a member of the board of directors of the sugar trade association and was a member of the board of directors of the Association of the German Sugar Industry . For this activity he was appointed to the Royal Council of Commerce in 1899 .

Gustav Schmidt had married Jenny Neuschaefer , the daughter of the Magdeburg wine wholesaler Franz Neuschaefer . The marriage produced five children, four girls and a son. The son died as a child. In the 1870s, Gustav Schmidt had a large garden laid out south of the factory by the Magdeburg horticultural director Paul Viktor Niemeyer .

In his spare time he also pursued scientific studies. In 1893 he donated a large mollusc collection to the Magdeburg Museum , which included finds from all continents. The collection is now one of the museum's oldest preserved collections.
