Gustav Schmidt

Gustav Johann Leopold Schmidt (born September 16, 1826 in Vienna , † January 27, 1883 in Prague ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer. From 1864 he was professor of mechanical engineering at the polytechnic institute (later the kk German technical university ) in Prague.

Life

After the division into German and Czech teaching language and the name change of this institute, he was professor of mechanics and mechanical engineering from 1873. Gustav Schmidt was also rector of the Prague Technical University in 1868 and 1876.

In his actual areas of expertise, theoretical mechanics and mechanical engineering, he was particularly well known in Austria.

In 1871 he succeeded in deriving an analytical solution for the circular process work of a Stirling machine with sinusoidal piston movement and dead volume. These calculation results add a lot to the understanding of Stirling engines. The importance of the Stirling engine analysis according to the Schmidt cycle lies in the fact that it is still used successfully today for the design of Stirling engines, Stirling engines.

Schmidt was an Imperial and Royal Councilor and holder of the Russian Stanislaus Order 2nd class.
