Gustav Senn (born May 15, 1888 in Liestal , † March 23, 1971 in Basel ) was a Swiss violin maker .

Live and act

Gustav Senn was August Meinel's pupil in Liestal from 1905 to 1909 , where he passed his apprenticeship with the highest grade and distinction. He then continued to work for August Meinel until 1913. From 1913 to 1914 he worked as a journeyman with Eugen Sprenger in Frankfurt am Main. As early as 1914, when the First World War broke out , he returned to Switzerland, where he found a job in St. Gallen in the stringed instruments department of the musical instrument maker Alfred Seeger. From 1915 he worked for Paul Meinel in Basel and later became his successor. From 1929 he went into business for himself. At that time the business was located at Kohlenberg 11. Gustav's son Paul Senn took over the business, which was then taken over in 1980 by his son Andreas Senn in the third generation. Gustav Senn died on March 23, 1971 in Basel.

Gustav Senn was not only an excellent repairman, but also dedicated himself particularly to the new construction. He built his instruments on the model of Stradivari and Guarneri . In 1949 he made at least one violin based on the model of Giovanni Paolo Maggini . Because of their quality, his instruments are played by many soloists and professional musicians.
