Gustav von Kries

Carl Gustav von Kries (born June 7, 1815 in Osterwitt , near Neuchâtel, Marienwerder district; † February 13, 1858 in Marienwerder ) was a German historian and politician from the Kries family .

Life

Kries was the son of the landlord, member of the provincial parliament of the province of Prussia and councilor Nathanael Gottlob Kries . The father was raised to the nobility on September 9, 1840. The mother was Josephine nee Matthias. The parents had 13 children. The brother Theodor Albinus von Kries (1805–1868) later became a member of the First Prussian Chamber and the House of Representatives. The brother Adolf von Kries (1808-1889) later became a member of the Prussian House of Representatives.

Kries received lessons from private tutors until he was 13 years old. From 1821 to 1831 he attended the grammar school in Elbing and from 1831 to 1833 the grammar school in Marienwerder. He then studied mathematics, natural sciences, philosophy, history and politics at the University of Breslau (1831 to 1837) and Berlin (1837 to 1839) where he received his doctorate in 1838. phil. The doctoral thesis was entitled "De Gregorii Turonensis episcopi vita et scriptis". In 1839 he passed the examination for the higher teaching post and was habilitated in the same year and appointed as a private lecturer in Breslau. In 1844 he became an associate professor for political science. In 1856 he resigned from the professorship and moved to Marienwerder.

In 1846 and 1849 he was in England for several months and took teaching assignments at universities. During these trips, Kries, who was actually a Protestant denomination, came into contact with Irvingianism . During the sessions of the state parliament he was temporarily a deacon of the Catholic-Apostolic congregations in Berlin.

In 1850 he was a member of the Volkshaus of the Erfurt Union Parliament . From 1850 to 1852 he was a member of the Second Prussian Chamber .
