Gustave Frédéric Dollfus

Gustave Frédéric Dollfus (born November 26, 1850 in Paris , † November 6, 1931 there ) was a French paleontologist, geologist and malacologist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Dollfus ".

Life

Dollfus came from a well-known Alsatian family from Mühlhausen. His father was Frédéric Dollfus (1803-1856), his mother Noémie Martin (1820-1915). He was interested in natural history since childhood, as was his cousin Adrien Dollfus , the founder of the magazine La Feuille des jeunes naturalistes . After studying at the Sorbonne (1868 to 1870) with Edmond Hébert and from 1871 to 1873 in Lille with Jules Gosselet , he worked from 1879 for the French geological survey (Service de la carte géologique de la France), for which he worked around a dozen geological Maps 1: 80,000 created.

He was very interested in applications of geology, for example the connection between geology and hydrology in the Paris Basin or the possibility of a tunnel under the English Channel. He used the railway construction in France to study new developments. In 1869, a borehole detected halite on the Dollfus estate near Mühlhausen , the beginning of the discovery of potash deposits in Alsace.

Gustave Frédéric Dollfus became a member of the Paleontological Society in the founding year 1912

In 1896 and 1916 he was president of the Société de géologie de France . In 1923 he received the Lyell Medal .

He dealt with Tertiary in Normandy, the Paris Basin and Portugal and its mollusks. He wrote an important treatise on aquitanium and an extensive series of treatises on Miocene mollusks in the Loire Basin. In his book Principes de géologie transformiste he turned against Alcide Dessalines d'Orbigny and his theories of catastrophe in the succession of Georges Cuvier . Dollfus was a Lamarckist .

He wrote for the Revue critique de Paléozoologie by Maurice Cossmann (1850-1924).

The parasitologist Robert-Philippe Dollfus (1887–1976) was his son. The sea snail Crysallida dollfusi and several other animal species are named in his honor.

He created geological maps of Paris and the surrounding area 1: 40,000, of Paris 1: 320,000 and geological maps 1: 80,000 of Paris, Melun, Fontainebleau, Rouen, Meaux, Chateaudun, Évreux, Chartres, Beaugency.
