Alexandre Édouard Maurice Cossmann (born September 18, 1850 in Paris , † May 17, 1924 in Enghien-les-Bains ) was a French malacologist and paleontologist .

Life

Cossmann was the son of the painter and etcher Hermann Moritz Cossmann (1821–1890). He attended the Lycée Condorcet in Paris and then studied there at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures . He then worked for the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord , a French railway company, where he rose to become chief engineer.

He is known as a paleontologist and malacologist (a specialist in molluscs ). He published, among other things, a standard work on the fossil mollusks of the Eocene of the Paris Basin (and the Loire Valley ) and on the mollusks of the Neogene of Aquitaine , both multi-volume works with several thousand pages. Between 1897 and 1926 he published 186 articles and monographs ( alone or with others ).

From 1897 to 1919 he was the editor of the “Revue critique de paleozoologie” a specialist journal for paleozoology , from 1920 to 1924 continued as “Revue critique de Paléozoologie et de paleophytologie” , d. H. expanded to include paleobotany .

Maurice Cossmann is u. a. First describer of the mussel genus Schafhaeutlia COSSMANN 1897.

A magazine on the fauna of the tertiary era that has been published since 1990 is called “Cossmanniana” (publisher GERMC: Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches sur la Macrofaune Cénozoique). The genus Cossmannia NEWTON 1891 from the class of gastropods was named in his honor by Richard Bullen Newton .
