Gustave Gillman

Gustave Gillman (* 1856 in London , † February 1922 in Brazil ) was a railway engineer and photographer.

Life

His parents were Robert and Caroline, the daughter of Alphonse Bovet, from the Bovet de Chine family , as they are called in Neuchâtel .

Gustave Gillman traveled a lot in his childhood. He studied in England and became a civil and mining engineer.

1873-1875 he worked on the London, Chatham and Dover Railway . He then followed his older brother Frederick (Fritz; 1845–1925) to Spain in the province of Granada , where he met his future wife. In June 1881 he married María del Rosario Sirvent de Berganza (or Braganza) in Gibraltar. He worked in Linares , the province of Almería and the province of Granada.

In 1889 he started with the British railway company The Great Southern of Spain Railway Company Limited ( Ferrocarril del Almanzora ). He led the construction of the route between Lorca , Baza and the El Hornillo beach near Águilas (see Águilas # story ). Around 1893 the family moved to Águilas . They had eleven children, seven of whom survived childhood. In early 1894 he invented Gillman's tachymeter chart . From 1897 to 1911 he was the successor to Henry Atwell Purdon, General Manager of the company.

Railway line of the Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas

From 1913 he worked in Brazil as a general superintendent on the construction of the railway between Vitória and Itabira in the state of Minas Gerais (Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas). On December 15, 1929, the Engenheiro Guillman train station named after him was inaugurated.

He was also a gifted photographer and took his camera, tripod, and glass plates with him while working or traveling. Using his photographs, he also made oil or watercolor paintings. He was also drawn to astronomy. He was buried in Petrópolis . In Aguilas, Calle Gustavo Gillman is named after him.
