In 1903 he visited Paris with Émile Verhaeren . After his brother's marriage, Gustave lived for some time with Valerius de Saedeleer in Leuven.

They then went to the UK to stay in various locations. After returning to Belgium in 1919, Van de Woestyne settled in Waregem . 1923 built a house in Laethem-Saint-Martin.

In 1924 he went to Vienna and the following spring to Florence and Venice.

In 1925 he settled in Mechelen and was appointed director and professor of painting at the local academy. He held this position until 1939.

At the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he succeeded Frans Hens as professor of animal painting. In 1926 he joined the “IX. Group "at. Nine Flemish artists were there: Gustave Van de Woestyne, Frits Van den Berghe , Hippolyte Daeye , Oscar Jespers, Willem Paerels, Constant Permeke , Henri-François Raemaekers, Gustave de Smet and Edgard Tytgat .
