Hippolyte Daeye

Hippolyte Adhemar Daeye (also D'Haeye ) (born March 16, 1873 in Gent , Belgium , † September 18, 1952 in Antwerp , Belgium) was a Belgian painter, primarily of human figures. Initially a painter of impressionism , he is later assigned to expressionism .

Life

Hippolyte Daeye studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1896 to 1899 and at the Antwerp Institute from 1899 to 1902. In 1903 he traveled to Spain for eight months . In 1912 he traveled again to Spain to the Museo del Prado in Madrid . Impressed by the works of Diego Velázquez , he turned to painting for children. From 1914 to 1920 he fled to Croydon in Great Britain because of the First World War . There he got to know the works of Picasso , Modigliani , Derain and Matisse , who had a decisive influence on his painting style. Daeye was involved in Belgian artistic life and in 1942 became a member of the Royal Flemish Academy.
