Gusti Jirku

Augustina "Gusti" Jirku , also Stridsberg (born August 27, 1892 in Chernivtsi , † 1978 in Lidingö ) was a German-speaking writer and translator from Slovenian .

Life

The banker's daughter lived near Windischgraz from 1916 and only began to learn Slovenian intensively after 1924. Her teacher aroused her interest in Ivan Cankar , so that in 1929 she made a selection of works under the title Der Knecht Jernej. A selection published in translation. Emil Alphons Rheinhardt contributed the foreword . In 1930 her translation was published by Cankars Hiša Marije Pomočnice under the title The House of the Merciful Mother of God . In 1931 she caused a sensation with her first novel of her own between the ages .

During the Spanish Civil War she was a paramedic on the Republican side with the International Brigades .

By VENONA was revealed that during the Second World War in San Francisco under the cover name Klara as informant for Soviet intelligence worked.
