Gustl Kröner

Gustl Kröner (born March 20, 1908 in Traunstein , † August 19, 1933 on the Matterhorn ) was a German mountaineer and painter .

Life

Kröner was an apprentice in his father's painting business. His passion for mountaineering was awakened early on. He was known among mountaineers for his daring and borderline risk-taking . He achieved numerous spectacular first ascents and he was one of the most respected alpinists of his time. In 1930 he met Anderl Heckmair . The joint attempt to conquer the north face of the Grandes Jorasses failed, but they managed numerous challenging ascents, including the north face of the Aiguille des Grands Charmoz . Together they also cycled to Morocco and climbed the west ridge of the Jbel Toubkal in the Atlas . While trying to climb the north face of the Matterhorn with Walter Stößer , he died from falling rocks .

In addition to alpine painting, Kröner was active as a graphic artist and illustrator. The art magazine Die Mappe dedicated a special issue to him in 1933, which contains not only oil paintings, drawings and watercolors but also interior design designs. He should as a lecturer teach painting and graphics from the fall semester 1933 at the University of Schwerin, but died before he could take up the position. Today only a few works by Kröner have survived.
