Leidenhausen estate

Gut Leidenhausen is a former water-defended knight's seat in today's Cologne district of Eil . It is located on the western edge of the Wahner Heide , adjacent to the Königsforst .

history

Since the 14th century. the formerly water-protected knight's seat (first documented mention in 1329) passed through the hands of several noble families. The name "Leidenhausen" is a place name. It goes back to the 7th to 9th century and means "the settlement or the farm of an owner named Leido". Today's building complex was essentially given its shape during the time of the Barons von Hatzfeld in the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as the Barons von Weichs and the Counts of Mirbach-Harff in the 18th and 19th centuries. Until 1803, Gut Leidenhausen was also the administrative center for the entire area between Bergisch Gladbach and Siegburg .

After the expropriation of the forests to the east of the mouse path and their attachment to the military training area, Theodor v. Mirbach-Harff Leidenhausen to Ferdinand Mülhens Senior, who turned the estate into a farm for the Röttgen stud . Vacant lots were filled with stables and barns around 1920 and 1930, respectively, so that the courtyard was given its current closed shape with the characteristic archway. In 1963 the city of Cologne acquired the estate. The Leidenhausen estate was a large farm until 1964. In 1982 the “Haus des Waldes” nature museum was set up in the eastern barn wing, and its educational museum space is used by the forest school of the German Forest Protection Association .

Since July 1, 1980, the courtyard has been entered in the monuments list of the city of Cologne .

Environmental education center

Since July 1, 2018, Gut Leidenhausen has been the official environmental education center of the city of Cologne. The environmental education center, funded by the City of Cologne between 2018 and 2021 with an annual amount of € 220,700, is part of the city's environmental education concept. The aim of this concept is to expand offers for children, adolescents and adults for environmental education and imparting nature experiences. The work of the environmental education center should be carried out in close cooperation with the initiatives already active on site. The use of the spatial and content resources has the goal of offering a comprehensive and free offer for all social classes in the field of environmental education.
