Neurath (Cologne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neurath was a former farm , which was located in what is now the right bank of the Rhine district of Cologne, Mülheim am Rhein , today around Neurather Weg 18. Its name was also transferred in 1930/31 to the Neurath settlement in the Höhenhaus district , which was built on the farm's land has been. Seldom, but in official sources, the southern extension of the Bruder Klaus settlement is also referred to as the Neurath settlement .

history

For centuries, the grounds of the Neurath court formed part of Schönrath and thus belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Altenberg until it was abolished in 1803 as part of secularization . Since Schönrath was very large with 773 acres , it was divided into two leases after the secularization and a new courtyard building was erected, with the younger courtyard being named Neurath .

From the possession of the domain it was bought by Baron Theodor von Fürstenberg (1772–1828), who was seated at Schloss Stammheim . As in previous centuries, he and his descendants had the property managed by tenants.

From around 1860 the Litz family managed the estate together with Schönrath. In 1928, Schönrath came from the property of the current von Fürstenberg-Stammheim family into the possession of the city of Cologne, which, like numerous other estates in their bacon belt, acquired it to store land, for the purpose of later subdivision into plots for residential construction or commercial use.

Since the Schönrather and Neurather Hofs were not only owned by the same property, but were also leased for a long time from 1860 onwards, the younger of the two farms increasingly lost its importance. It was not only after the city of Cologne took over the courtyard area and the progressive division of the previously agriculturally used areas as building land that the maintenance of two farms that were so close together became unprofitable, so that the Neurather Hof was finally given up and fell into disrepair. At the beginning of the 1960s, the remaining parts of the building were removed and the remaining land was used to expand the Bruder-Klaus settlement to the south (Von-Galen-Straße).

Neurath settlement

While the farm left no traces, its name persists in several street and quarter names: the Neurather Ring (a section of the so-called military ring on the right bank of the Rhine ) and the Neurather Weg as well as the name "Siedlung Neurath" (today often simply called "Neurath" ). Neurather Weg, originally the route that led from today's Berliner Strasse to Neurather Hof, was partially renamed in 2017 as "Circus-Roncalli-Weg" .

The name "Siedlung Neurath" is used for two different settlements, both of which were built on the land of the former Neurath Hof:

  • The Neurath settlement of the GAG was built under this name in 1930/1931. It is bounded by the streets Berliner Straße, Selkestraße, Wernigeroder Weg and Am Flachsrosterweg. It originally comprised 476 apartments in 118 houses arranged in 16 rows. This included shops for supplying the population and a kindergarten with large play areas. 14 of 16 lines were built according to designs by the architects Adolf Haug, Fritz Fuß , Hammer, Paul Pott , Theodor Willkens, Volberg and Philippson. The architects Benoit and Bergerhausen were responsible for the design and construction management of the last two lines. The street names within the settlement all refer to places or rivers in the Harz Mountains . The houses were partially modernized in the years 1993-2006 (among other things, energetically refurbished and added storeys), partially replaced by new buildings, to the regret of many residents and a tenant initiative who saw the destruction of a social structure that had grown over decades. Colloquially, the area of this settlement is usually referred to as "Neurath" and is z. B. named for an allotment gardening association in Bodestrasse and for a pharmacy opposite the settlement.
  • In the official division of the city's districts, on the other hand, the residential area adjoining the Bruder-Klaus-Siedlung south of the street system von-Galen-Str. is formed, together with the Neurather Weg, called "Neurath settlement".

Others

Another risk of confusion arises from the fact that the Neurath power station, 35 kilometers from Cologne, is erroneously referred to as "Cologne-Neurath" .
