R. Guy Erwin (* 1958 in Pawhuska , Oklahoma ) is an American Evangelical Lutheran theologian and bishop.

Life

Erwin graduated from Harvard University and Yale University and earned a bachelor's degree, two masters degrees and a doctorate. From 1993 to 1999 he taught history and theology at Yale Divinity School. From 2000 he was professor of Lutheran theology and church history at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks . In 2008 he was appointed to the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council. Although he had worked as a parish associate in a Lutheran congregation in New Haven (Connecticut) from 1986 onwards , he was only able to be ordained in 2011 due to his sexual orientation .

In May 2013 Erwin was elected by the Synod of Southwest California (Southwest California Synod) for a six-year term as Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America .

Erwin has been married to Rob Flynn since August 2013, with whom he has had a same-sex relationship since 1994. Erwin is not only, as Osage , the first indigenous American, but also the first openly gay bishop of the ELCA.
