Life

Guy Tillim studied at the University of Cape Town and graduated in 1985 with a BA in Economics. In 1986 he joined the South African photography association Afrapix and started working for Reuters South Africa. From 1988 he worked as a freelancer for other press agencies (especially for AFP ).

His artistic work includes series of images of political trouble spots in Africa, portraits and urban works that are close to investigative reportage journalism. Tillim prefers to work in color ; his pictures are characterized by restrained contrasts in brightness and an elegiac construction.

“For Guy Tillim, his artistic attitude is formulated on the delicate border between empathy and distancing. His ways through the countries of southern Africa are not dictated by predetermined goals, but seem to follow an initially unprejudiced attention to the circumstances and the worlds of life that the people themselves have brought about and into which they are equally placed. Tillim is not looking for the 'right', the 'successful' motif, he lets himself be found by pictures, so to speak, lets them approach him in order to circling them at the same time in a directed movement, to describe them. [...] Tillim does not provide us with any photographic findings that can be used by journalists, despite precise location and situation information, but draws us into the cycle of interpretations and standpoints, points of view and interpretations; he forces us into an openness to references and references, which the apparent 'weakness' of the judgment is converted into the strength of precise and repeated observations. "
