György Vashegyi

György Vashegyi (born April 13, 1970 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian conductor, harpsichordist and music teacher. Vashegyi is a recognized expert in the interpretation of early music .

life and work

Vashegyi began his musical studies as an instrumentalist. He initially played the violin, recorder, oboe and harpsichord. At the age of 18 he took up conducting studies with Ervin Lukács at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, graduating with honors in 1993. He deepened his studies in conducting master classes with John Eliot Gardiner and Helmuth Rilling . From 1994 to 1997 he studied continuo with John Toll in Dresden. In chamber music he continued his education with Jaap ter Linden and Simon Standage .

As a continuo player he played with Hungarian orchestras such as the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra and the Concerto Armonico . In 1990 Vashegyi founded the Purcell Choir in Budapest and the Orfeo Orchestra a year later . In concerts in Budapest he conducted important musical works of the 17th and 18th centuries, which up to this point had not yet been performed in Hungary. Examples of this are Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri , Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen and Funeral Anthem, as well as Georg Friedrich Handel's Theodora or the Requiem in D minor by Joseph Martin Kraus from 1775. At the same time, he advocated research into and performances of works by Hungarian composers 18th century a. Vashegyi mainly works with his own ensembles, but also appears as a guest conductor with various early music ensembles such as Concerto Armonico , Capella Savaria and Musica Aeterna and also with modern symphony and chamber orchestras. Vashegyi has been conducting regularly at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 . In 2004, for example, Vashegyi conducted the Prague Chamber Orchestra at the Mozart Festival in Würzburg and the Rheingau Music Festival in Kloster Eberbach .

Vashegyi has been a continuo professor at the Franz Liszt Music Academy since 1992. Between 1995 and 1997 he also taught at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Budapest.

In 2008 Vashegyi received the Liszt Prize in Hungary. In 2015 he was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Order of Knights . In 2017 György Vashegyi was elected President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA, Magyar Művészeti Akadémia), which was founded in 1992.
