Aleida Leurink

Aleida Leurink (born September 24, 1682 in Enschede , † August 6, 1755 in Losser ) was a Dutch pastor's wife who became known for her notebooks, which she wrote for 57 years.

Youth and marriage

Leurink was orphaned at a young age. Both her father, the mayor of Enschede , and her mother died in 1694. Together with her sisters Geeske, Catharina and Judith and her brother Georgius, she was entrusted to the care of her uncle Jan Stroink.

At the age of fifteen, Leurink married Henricus Keller (1669–1750), then 28 years old, pastor in Losser . They had five children, four of whom reached adulthood, and lived together for 56 years.

Notebooks

“Wat ik zo dagelijks would like to beleven || heb ik in een boekske neergeschreven || Zoodat op mijnen ouden dag || Geheel mijn leven voor mij lag. "

“What I experienced every day, || I wrote down in a little book || So in my old days || my whole life lay ahead of me. "

On the day of her wedding, Aleida Leurink started keeping her diaries. In the first few years they were short notes, but they got more and more extensive over time. From 1698 to 1752 she recorded wheat prices. She had had a thermometer and a barometer since 1749 and recorded their values every day. In addition to providing data related to her work, such as the weather and the yield from growing wheat , Leurink also provided insight into the events of the years she was writing. She recorded anecdotes about her children, but also great incidents such as floods, animal diseases, fires, love and suffering of the Orange people and battles between Reformed and Catholics . The terms used in the field of spinning and weaving suggest that she knew about these trades. In addition, she mentioned what she had earned with each transaction.

Aleida Leurink's diary was made available to the public at the beginning of the 20th century by Jacobus Joännes van Deinse (1867–1947) when he wrote an article about it in the Dutch regional newspaper Twentsch Dagblad Tubantia .

Since Aleida kept records for 57 years, her notebooks are a rich source for everyday life during this period. She also wrote about important events in the history of Losser or of national importance. Her recorded data on the weather and wheat prices provide historians with much valuable information. She also wrote about German places like Gildehaus , Burgsteinfurt and Nordhorn . The latter was the birthplace of her husband.

Her diaries were published as early as 1754. Parts of the diary can be read in different places.

In 2009 Maria Leonie Hansen put together the “Tot Losser kwam” and published it. On the website of the Losser weather station you can find all the information on the weather from the diary from 1723 to 1756, edited by Johan Effing up to 2013. To compare Leurink's weather records, he contrasts the weather publications by Peter van Musschenbroek from 1740.

In Losser, next to the church, there is the “Aleida Leurinkhuis”, which has been a national monument since 1965. It is used today as a community house. Leurink never lived in this building, but in the neighboring house.
