Gyan Mukherjee

Gyan Mukherjee (born September 30, 1909 in Varanasi , Uttar Pradesh , † November 13, 1957 in Kolkata , West Bengal ) was an Indian screenwriter and film director of Hindi films .

Life

After completing a scientific degree, he was editor of the journal Science and Culture . He started at the film company Bombay Talkies as technical director. After Himansu Rai's death and during the leadership crisis at Bombay Talkies, he was part of the production unit under Sashadhar Mukerji . He wrote the script for NR Acharya's films Bandhan (1940) and Naya Sansar (1941), for the latter together with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas . In 1941 he made his first film with Ashok Kumar , Jhoola . The subsequent large-scale production Kismet (1943) became the most successful Indian film of the 1940s and is now Mukherjee's best-known directorial work. The film company Filmistan was founded from the proceeds of this film , for whose first production Chal Chal Re Naujawan (1944) he was again entrusted with the direction. Gyan Mukherjee's cinematic style was based on 1930s productions by Warner Bros. With Ashok Kumar he went back to Bombay Talkies and directed the gangster drama Sangram (1950) there. He died during the production of Madhu , which was completed by S. Bannerjee and not published until 1959.

Guru Dutt dedicated his film Pyaasa (1957) to Gyan Mukherjee .
