Kismet ( Hindi किस्मत kismat ) is a Hindi film directed by Gyan Mukherjee in 1943. It was the most successful Indian film of the 1940s.

action

The pickpocket Shekhar is released from prison for the third time and is back to his old job. He befriends an old man who once owned a theater and is the father of the famous singer Rani. In a fit of greed he had made her dance to exhaustion, crippling her. She is now employed and owes her debt to Indrajit, the new owner of the theater.

Shekhar tries to steal the jewelry from Indrajit's wife and is surprised by the police. While on the run, he hides in Rani's house. They fall in love and Shekhar awakens in Rani a new zest for life and new energy for her career, which is currently at its lowest point. Shekhar wants to raise the money to let Rani cure her disability.

One day, when Rani wears a necklace stolen from Shekhar at Indrajit, Shekhar is arrested. He escapes the police again. Rani is heartbroken and Shekhar regrets what he did. In order to make amends, he decides to commit only one crime for Rani. He breaks into Indrajit's house again and steals money needed for Rani's treatment. Then he disappears from her life.

Shekhar is overtaken by the law. Indrajit, blind with anger, set the police on him and Shekhar is back in prison. He escapes his sentence because the trial reveals that Shekhar Indrajit's long-lost son is. His “new” brother Mohan is allowed to marry Rani's sister Lila, whom he impregnated.

In the end, all the protagonists in the family of the patriarch Indrajit are happily united.

background

For producer Sashadhar Mukerji , Kismet was the fifth major commercial success in a row after Kangan (1939), Bandhan (1940), Jhoola (1941) and Naya Sansar (1941). The dispute between Devika Rani and Sashadhar Mukerji over the management of the production company Bombay Talkies , which developed after the death of Himansu Rai , escalated completely. Sashadhar and his production unit around director Gyan Mukherjee broke out and he founded his own production company, Filmistan , from the profits from Kismet .

A February 1943 contemporary review in Filmindia magazine condemned the film as an imitation of John Cromwell's 1938 Algiers and considered the glorification of crime to be a bad influence on the younger generation.

Kismet ran 192 consecutive weeks in the same cinema in Kolkata - a record that was only broken by Sholay 32 years later .
