The Wellingdorf grammar school is a grammar school in the Wellingdorf district of Kiel .

history

The Wellingdorf grammar school dates back to the establishment of the Royal Realschule in 1914, making it the oldest grammar school on the east bank of Kiel. After Kiel was elevated to the status of a Imperial War Port in 1871, the strong population growth had visibly transformed the fishing and farming villages of Gaarden, Ellerbek and Wellingdorf into a Kiel suburb after their incorporation in 1910 and made it necessary to found a secondary school.

building

The clock tower above the rebuilt brick building is characteristic, which together with the west wing (1958), the extension with gym, atrium, teachers' and classrooms to the east (1964) and the upper school building from 1986 encloses a schoolyard open to the south and the view into the green on the nearby sports facilities.

In the last few years the building has been modernized and renewed. In addition to energy efficiency measures, the subject rooms for chemistry and physics and the auditorium were renewed in 2009 and 2010 and a school library was newly established. In addition, part of the biology rooms was modernized in 2013.

deals

As an open all-day school, the Wellingdorf grammar school offers a lunch menu and an extensive range of study groups in the afternoon. A special feature is the wind and string class, in which interested children from the 5th grade onwards are introduced to making music together in intensified music lessons. The first foreign language English follows in the 6th grade as a second foreign language of your choice Latin or French, and as a third foreign language also Spanish or Russian. The close cooperation with GEOMAR , which is within sight of the school, deserves special mention . Joint working groups and projects enable scientific work from orientation to upper level. Free homework help is offered in the afternoon Monday to Friday, which is supervised by former teachers of the school, students from the University of Kiel via the Mercator Foundation and high school students.
