The Lennestadt High School (GymSL) is a high school in Lennestadt-Altenhundem with almost 800 students. The educational institution employs around 75 teachers; The school authority is the city of Lennestadt .

history

The school was opened in 1911 as a rectorate school in Altenhundem. The background to the founding efforts since 1902 was the lack of higher education opportunities in the eastern part of the Olpe district . The first rooms were initially in a former cigar factory. A new building, called "Himbeerpenne", followed in 1914. The Lenne School was used as an additional building.

Because the rector at the time refused to hoist a swastika flag, he was transferred as a penalty during the Nazi era . In 1942 the school was converted into a community high school. After the Second World War it was a Progymnasium . This included grammar school classes up to grade 10. The completion was the secondary school leaving certificate . To take the Abitur, the students had to move to another city.

In 1953 the school moved to today's location "Biertappen". The school's layout has been patented.

Since 1963 the school has been a modern language full high school. Gerhard Junge was director of the school from 1971 to 1979 . At that time the importance of the natural sciences increased greatly. Today the school strives for practical training and cooperation with business. Teachers and employees from a local industrial company come together to plan and implement business-related projects.

In 1987, the “Temple of Art” was built as a separate building for art classes. Further extensions to the building were made in 1994. A Foucault pendulum is located in the new entrance area .

particularities

Since the 1980s, the student exchange with France and in the 2010s with Poland have served to promote international understanding. School partnerships exist with the Collège Albert Camus in Neuville-les-Dieppe, the Collège Claude Monet in St. Nicolas d'Aliermont both in France and the Gimnazjum No. 3 Tomasa Morusa in Otwock in Poland.

A project to help street children in Brazil had existed as an initiative of students and teachers since the 1990s.

The special courses offered include wind classes and various study groups. Since 1990 the hospital radio "Radio Lennestadt" has been among them. Together with the local association of radio amateurs, the school has been running a weather station since 2007.

The school participates intensively in the Agenda 21 process and was awarded in 2008 by the project "School of the Future - Education for Sustainability of the Nature and Environmental Protection Academy NRW" for various projects.
