from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eva-Maria Houben (born January 15, 1955 in Rheinberg am Niederrhein ) is a German composer , organist , pianist and musicologist ( university teacher ).

Life and work

Eva-Maria Houben grew up in Kamp-Lintfort . Her mother worked as a special school teacher , her father was a mechanical engineer and presbyter in the Protestant village church of Hoerstgen . Eva-Maria Houben did the organ service there during her high school days. After graduating from high school, she studied school music (1974–78) and artistic organ playing with Gisbert Schneider (1978–80) at the Folkwang University in Essen . Her teachers at the Folkwang University also included Mauricio Rosenmann Taub (music theory) and Ludger Maxsein (piano).

1978-82 was Eva-Maria Houben organist in the Protestant town church Dinslaken and graduated from the University of Duisburg a degree in German studies and musicology . 1984–86 she taught music and German at the grammar school in Lennestadt and at the grammar school on Gartenstrasse in Mönchengladbach - Rheydt .

After doctorate (1986, with Norbert Linke ) and habilitation (1990) in musicology, Eva-Maria Houben took on teaching positions at the University of Duisburg (1987–93) and the Robert Schumann University of Düsseldorf (1992/93). In 1993 she was appointed professor at the Institute for Music and Musicology at the Technical University of Dortmund . Her research and teaching focus on music theory and new music . She organizes concerts with compositions by the students, which she also gives the opportunity to exchange with experienced colleagues in her series of composer portraits (since 1993 with Nikolaus Brass , Violeta Dinescu , Vinko Globokar and Adriana Hölszky, among others ).

Eva-Maria Houben publishes regularly in magazines ( MusikTexte , Neue Musikzeitung , Neue Zeitschrift für Musik , Das Orchester , Positions ) and appears as an organist and pianist (including in the piano series in the Kunstraum Düsseldorf ).

Eva-Maria Houben lives in Krefeld .

Compositional aesthetics and practice

Listening to delicate dynamics through to silence , sensitization for sound processes and perception processes play a central role in Eva-Maria Houben's musical thinking. Here she intervenes u. a. Suggestions from John Cage , whose works she also interprets as a pianist.

The compositions by Eva-Maria Houben are published by Edition Wandelweiser ; In the Wandelweiser Composers Ensemble she works with Antoine Beuger , Burkhard Schlothauer , Jürg Frey , Radu Malfatti a . a. together. She is also particularly interested in integrative performance projects in which professional musicians and laypeople work together, and the design of spatial sound - installations that anticipate an upcoming concert at a certain location (e.g. in a church ) or allow it to reverberate afterwards.

Quote

“I can hear different kinds of pauses from music. Musicologists assign different types of functions to different types of pauses. Pause, as can be heard and read, can mean something ... like sound . I am now starting to hear less the pause that refers to something, means something, has a certain function ... - I am now starting to hear more the real pause, the pause that becomes dangerous: music is gone, music is disappeared. There is nothing left, there is n / nothing. I don't hear anything - and I hear that I'm still hearing something ... "
