Nikolaus Brass (born October 25, 1949 in Lindau (Bodensee) ) is a German composer .

Life and work

Nikolaus Brass began to compose at an early age. After graduation in 1968 he graduated in Munich , Scotland and the Free University of Berlin , a medical school . He studied composition with Peter Kiesewetter in Munich, with Frank Michael Beyer at the University of the Arts in Berlin and with Helmut Lachenmann in Hanover . 1980-86 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses . There he met Morton Feldman , who had a lasting influence on his further musical thinking and work.

For many years worked as a physician Brass - first as a hospital doctor , from 1982 as editor of the journal Medical practice - and in parallel as a composer. The "concrete confrontation with the existential fragility of human existence, with departure and happiness, but also pain, infirmity and death acted like a compass in the search for expression."

Characteristic of his music were "flowing time processes, questions of order and disturbance, the [...] scanning of the acoustic outer surface for what it contains as an echo, as well as aspects of human existence" in a "permanent circle of losing and finding again."

Brass' works have been performed regularly at festivals since 1981. In 2008 his work was the focus of the International Weingarten Days for New Music.

His compositions Void (for piano) and Void II (for solos and orchestra) - named after the Voids , the “empty spaces” in the Jewish Museum Berlin that remind of the loss of life, culture and memory through the Shoah - were published in 2009 at the Klangwerktage in Hamburg juxtaposed with a group composition by young people who had dealt with the same topic. In an accompanying panel discussion , the architect of the Jewish Museum, Daniel Libeskind , and Nikolaus Brass discussed forms of commemoration in architecture and music.
