Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum grows individually with dark green to gray-green to pale green, flattened spherical to spherical shoots that reach a diameter of 10 centimeters and more. The nine to eleven (rarely up to 18) ribs are divided into conical cusps. The single white to gray central spine is directed downwards and up to 2 centimeters (rarely up to 4 centimeters) long. The three to seven stiff, thin, straight radial spines that are slightly curved towards the shoot are whitish to yellowish or grayish with a darker base. They are up to 1 inch long.

The bell- to funnel-shaped, white or light yellowish or greenish-white flowers reach a length of up to 5 centimeters (rarely up to 7 centimeters) and a diameter of 5.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum is found in southern Uruguay and northeast Argentina at altitudes of up to 500 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus hyptiacanthus in 1839 by Charles Lemaire . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 in the genus Gymnocalycium . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum subsp. hyptiacanthum
  • Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum subsp. paucicostatum (R. Kiesling) Papsch
  • Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum subsp. schroederianum (east) Papsch

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN the way and the subspecies is Gymnocalycium hyptiacanthum subsp. schroederianum as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. listed as not endangered.
